Dementia Care Costs

Dementia Care costs

Dementia Care offers specialised and empathetic support for your loved one at home following a dementia diagnosis. Similar to all our care and support services, Dementia Care is competitively priced while upholding the highest standards of quality.

There are various forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy Body dementia, and vascular dementia, each presenting a range of symptoms depending on severity. As a result, the cost of our Dementia Care encompasses a fully personalized care plan tailored to align with your loved one’s specific needs, preferences, and financial considerations.

We consistently evaluate their care plan to ensure that it continues to enhance their quality of life.

The cost of Dementia Care varies based on factors such as the type of care required and its frequency. Whether your loved one requires minimal or extensive care to sustain a safe and independent lifestyle at home, we are equipped to provide assistance. Our services encompass a broad spectrum, ranging from brief home visits to Overnight Care and Live-in Care for individuals with dementia.

How much does Dementia Care cost?

When considering dementia care, it’s crucial to evaluate the level and type of care your loved one needs, as this will influence the associated costs. Our wide array of senior care services is geared towards supporting your loved one with their daily living activities, including providing specialised dementia care to help them effectively cope with any symptoms they may experience.

How much does Dementia Care cost?

If you are taking care of a loved one who needs constant support, deciding between Live in Care and a care home can be tough. Cost is a crucial factor to consider. Many families find Live in Care for dementia to be a compassionate and cost-effective alternative to a care home. This option allows your loved one to stay in familiar surroundings, which can be especially comforting for someone with dementia, as adjusting to a new environment can be distressing. Moreover,  Live In Care for couples can be a thoughtful and economical choice compared to the financial burden of two sets of care home fees.

Furthermore,  choosing Live in Dementia Care means that the value of the home will not be taken into account when assessing your loved one’s eligibility for financial help from the local authority. This will allow your loved one to keep their home as an asset.

We’re passionate about providing high quality Care at Home to make life easier for you and your loved ones.

Why pay for Dementia Care at Home?

Elderly individuals with dementia often prefer to stay at home for comfort and familiarity. In-home dementia care offers benefits such as increased social and physical engagement, and reduced reliance on medication.

Our trained team of dementia care workers can support your loved one at home, enabling them to continue living life on their own terms.

Funding Live in Care

While we provide a summary of funding options for Live-in Care, Team24 Care Homecare is not authorised to offer financial advice. We strongly recommend seeking professional guidance from a registered adviser under the Financial Conduct Authority before exploring funding avenues.

NHS Funding

If a loved one with dementia has complex health conditions and care needs, they may be eligible for NHS continuing healthcare, which is free and funded by their local integrated care board (ICB). It’s important to note that a dementia diagnosis doesn’t automatically mean the individual will be eligible for NHS continuing healthcare.

In order to qualify, a team of healthcare professionals will assess the individual’s care needs, taking into account the assistance required, the complexity and intensity of their needs, as well as the unpredictability and any associated risks to their health if care is not provided at the right time.

If the individual is not eligible for NHS continuing healthcare but requires nursing care in a care home, they may be eligible for NHS funded nursing care. This means that the NHS will contribute towards the cost of the individual’s nursing home fees., irrespective of whoever is paying the remainder of the fees.

Local Authority Funding

Your local authority may offer funding for your loved one’s care based on their income and savings. If you opt for Dementia Care at Home, the property value is not considered.

To determine eligibility for local authority funding, request a care needs assessment. This assessment will evaluate the required care and conduct a Financial Assessment to determine funding eligibility.

If your loved one’s assets exceed £23,250, they will be responsible for covering the full cost of care, known as self-funding. However, they may still be eligible for state benefits such as Attendance Allowance and council tax reductions. If their assets are below this threshold, they will receive some funding from the local authority but will be expected to make a contribution toward the total cost of Dementia Care.

In general, if your assets exceed £23,250, you will be responsible for covering the cost of your care. However, you may still be eligible for state benefits, depending on your individual circumstances and needs. For more information, please get in touch with the social services department of your local authority.

Attendance Allowance

Attendance Allowance (AA) is a weekly state benefit designed to support older adults with long-term mental or physical disabilities that require additional assistance, such as dementia. It is paid directly to the individual with the condition or disability.

To be eligible for Attendance Allowance, the individual must meet the following criteria:

  • Be of State Pension age
  • Have a physical and/or mental disability
  • Have required care for at least six months

There are two different rates of funding based on the level of care needed. The lower rate is £68.10 per week and is for individuals who require care or support throughout the day or night. The higher rate is £101.75 per week and is for individuals who require care or support throughout the day and night, or who are expected to have 12 months or less to live.

Personal Independence Payment

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a state benefit that provides financial assistance to individuals with long-term physical or mental health conditions or disabilities. It is available for individuals aged 16 to State Pension age who encounter challenges in completing everyday tasks or getting around.

PIP is not subjected to means-testing, meaning that an individual’s savings or monthly income will not impact the payment. Additionally, PIP is tax-free and is not dependent on National Insurance contributions.

The benefit is comprised of two components: daily living and mobility, and an individual may be eligible for one or both components. There are two payment rates: standard or enhanced, based on the impact of the condition on the individual’s ability to carry out daily tasks and move around safely.

You can find more detailed information about Personal Independence Payment on the UK Government’s official website.

Comparing the cost of Dementia Care with

Consideration of costs is important when making the decision between home care and moving into a care home. Home care provides a cost-effective option for receiving daily assistance while preserving independence in a familiar environment.

Private Carers

While considering a private carer may seem like a cost-effective choice, it’s important to note that they might not be the best fit for your situation. Providing dementia care requires specialized training, and not all private carers receive the comprehensive training that most home care providers offer. Moreover, assuming the responsibility of recruiting and conducting background checks on a private carer can be complex. Our dedicated recruitment teams are here to assist with this process, ensuring that all carers have undergone enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. Additionally, our services are closely monitored by the CQC, providing added reassurance for your peace of mind.

Care Homes

Many care homes have several monthly fees, which include accommodation costs, as well as expenses for food and specialized Dementia Care. Providing care for dementia can be intricate, and the symptoms often necessitate personalized support. Consequently, care homes typically apply a higher rate for Dementia Care, with additional costs averaging around 15%, but potentially reaching up to 40% in certain cases.

On the other hand, in-home Dementia Care charges solely for the specific services that your loved one requires. This means that your loved one retains control over their care plan and daily routines. In a care home, staff attention is usually divided among the residents, whereas Home Care offers one-on-one care

Live in Care

When considering care options for a loved one with dementia, it’s important to carefully weigh the benefits of live-in care versus visiting care. Live in care provides continuous support at any time of day or night, while visiting care offers help specifically during scheduled visits. The cost of live-in care includes the presence of a caregiver living with your loved one, which naturally results in higher expenses compared to visiting care. It’s crucial to fully assess your loved one’s care needs before making a decision.

For instance, if your loved one only requires assistance with daily preparations, visiting dementia care might be a more economically viable choice.
